Chief Executive of United Airlines, Scott Kirby, said at the US Chamber of Commerce Aviation Summit just the day prior that domestic leisure demand “has almost entirely recovered.”

“I’m excited to share that United will resume the pilot hiring process that was halted last year,” the memo said. “We’ll start with the approximately 300 pilots who either had a new hire class date that was canceled or who had a 2020 conditional job offer.”

Kirby went on to explain that it is domestic leisure demand that is driving recovery at United Airlines. “Business demand is still down over 80%, and international borders, particularly for long-haul, are still largely closed. There are huge chunks of our business that are still almost at zero. But it’s really nice to see that [domestic leisure] recovery and that human desire for connection is going to come back and come back strong,” he said.

United said it will hire pilots who either had a new hire class date that was canceled or a 2020 conditional job offer. Congress in March approved a 6-month extension of a government program that gives airlines significant payroll assistance.

Since September 2020, almost 1,000 United pilots have either retired or participated in voluntary leave programs but the airline said “the number of new pilots needed will be dependent on our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
